Haldiram's Multigrain Homestyle Paratha is a frozen layered flatbread made with a blend of grain flours, folded so it separates into flakes as it cooks. It is an unstuffed paratha, which makes it the one to reach for when the curry is doing the heavy lifting.

Best for

• Serving with dal, sabzi or curry
• Breakfast with curd and pickle
• Wraps and rolls

How to cook it

Cook straight from frozen — no thawing. Heat a tawa over medium heat, lay the paratha on the dry pan and cook about two minutes a side until golden patches appear. Add a little oil or ghee towards the end and press lightly with a spatula so the layers open up. Serve hot.

Pack and storage

360 g pack containing 6 pieces. Keep frozen at -18°C. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Haldiram's Navrattan Mix is a many-part namkeen — fine sev, fried lentils, peanuts, crisp flakes and raisins in a masala that balances salt against a touch of sweetness. The variety of pieces is the point: every handful comes out a little different.

Best with

• Chai and evening snacking
• Snack bowls for guests
• Mixing into homemade bhel

Pack and storage

200 g pack. Keep in a cool, dry place and seal the pack after opening.

Haldiram's Onion Samosas are frozen pastry triangles filled with spiced onion rather than the usual potato, which gives them a sweeter, sharper filling and a lighter bite. The pastry crisps up hard and flaky and the pieces are sized for tea time rather than as a full meal.

Best for

• Tea-time snacking
• Party platters and starters
• Serving with mint or tamarind chutney

How to cook it

Cook from frozen, never thawed. In an air fryer, cook at 180°C for 12 to 14 minutes, shaking the basket once. In an oven, brush lightly with oil and bake on a lined tray at 200°C for 16 to 18 minutes, turning once, until deep golden. They can also be deep fried over a medium flame until crisp and evenly browned.

Pack and storage

350 g pack containing 16 pieces. Keep frozen at -18°C. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Haldiram's Panchrattan is a five-part namkeen mix bringing together sev, fried lentils, peanuts, crisp flour pieces and masala-coated bits in one bag. It is a savoury mix rather than a sweet-sour one, with a steady, moderate spice running through it.

Best with

• Afternoon chai
• Snacking with cold drinks
• Topping chaat or curd rice

Pack and storage

200 g pack. Store in a cool, dry place, sealed after opening.

Haldiram's Spring Roll is a frozen roll of thin pastry wrapped around a mixed vegetable filling, ready to crisp at home. The wrapper is fine enough to blister and shatter rather than go chewy, and the filling is seasoned lightly so it suits both Indian and western tables.

Best for

• Starters and party food
• Quick snacks for hungry children
• Serving with sweet chilli or soy dipping sauce

How to cook it

Cook from frozen without thawing. In an air fryer, cook at 190°C for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. In an oven, brush with oil and bake at 200°C for 15 to 18 minutes on a lined tray, turning halfway, until golden all over. For deep frying, use a medium flame so the wrapper crisps before the filling heats through.

Pack and storage

370 g pack containing 20 pieces. Keep frozen at -18°C. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Haldiram's Veg Shami Kebab is a frozen patty of ground lentils, vegetables, herbs and spices, shaped small and flat and set at a medium heat level. The lentil base gives it a soft, dense centre with a crust that firms up as it cooks.

Best for

• Starters with mint chutney and onion rings
• Stuffing into wraps, rolls and buns
• Party platters

How to cook it

Cook from frozen without thawing. Shallow fry in a little oil over medium heat for three to four minutes a side until browned and hot through. In an air fryer, cook at 180°C for 10 to 12 minutes, turning once. In an oven, brush with oil and bake at 200°C for 15 to 18 minutes, turning halfway.

Pack and storage

300 g pack containing 12 pieces. Keep frozen at -18°C. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Haldirams Aloo Kulcha is a frozen soft leavened flatbread stuffed with spiced potato. A kulcha has a breadier, more yielding crumb than a paratha, so it tears in the hand instead of flaking, and it holds up well to a wet curry.

Best for

• Serving with choley or a thick dal
• A filling lunch with onion salad
• Quick dinners

How to cook it

Cook from frozen without thawing. Heat a tawa or flat pan over medium heat and cook the kulcha dry for about two minutes a side, until it puffs and takes on brown patches. Brush with a little butter or oil and give it another thirty seconds each side. Moderate heat matters here so the dough cooks all the way through.

Pack and storage

320 g pack. Keep frozen at -18°C. Do not refreeze once thawed.

Heer Extra Long Basmati Rice is prized for its exceptional length, delicate fragrance, and fluffy texture when cooked. Ideal for biryanis, pilafs, and everyday meals.

These are blueberries, called Heidelbeeren in German; there is no widely used Hindi name, as they are not a traditional Indian fruit. They are small, round, deep blue-purple berries with a firm skin and juicy, mildly sweet-tart flesh.

They are eaten fresh on their own, added to fruit salads and yoghurt, and used in German baking such as Heidelbeerkuchen.

How to use

• Rinse gently just before eating, as washing too early can make them spoil faster.
• Pick out any soft or shrivelled berries before storing the rest.
• Keep in the fridge and use within about a week.

Heinz Mayonnaise is the brand's classic thick, creamy mayonnaise — smooth, mild and lightly tangy, without the sharp vinegar bite of a mustard-heavy German Remoulade.

It spreads cleanly on sandwiches and burger buns, holds its shape in potato salad, coleslaw and egg salad, and is the base most people start from for a quick dip: stir in garlic, sriracha, chopped herbs or a spoon of ketchup and it becomes something else entirely.

It is also the usual partner for pommes in Germany, alongside or instead of ketchup. Keep refrigerated once opened and use a clean spoon each time.

India Gate Classic Basmati is long-grain aromatic basmati in a 1kg pack, the size to keep on hand for a biryani at the weekend rather than for daily cooking. The grains cook separate and dry, elongate as they soften, and hold their shape well enough to be layered and reheated without turning to paste.

Best for

• Biryani, where the grains must stay distinct
• Pulao, jeera rice and plain steamed rice
• Fried rice made from rice cooked the day before

How to cook it

Rinse until the water runs clear, then soak for twenty to thirty minutes. Use about one and a half parts water to one part rice, boil, cover, and cook on the lowest heat for ten to twelve minutes, then rest it for five minutes before opening the pot. For biryani, parboil in generously salted water to about seventy per cent, drain, and finish on low heat under a sealed lid. Always fork the rice apart rather than stirring it.

Pack and storage

1kg pack. Store in a cool, dry place, sealed after opening, in an airtight container away from damp.

India Gate Excel Extra Long Basmati is the extra-long-grain line, chosen where grain length is the thing on show. The grains stretch out as they cook, stay separate and firm, and carry the clean basmati aroma that comes up as soon as the pot reaches steam. The 1kg pack suits a small household or a first try before committing to a sack.

Best for

• Biryani and pulao
• Jeera rice and plain steamed rice with dal
• Fried rice, where separate grains matter

How to cook it

Rinse until the water runs clear, then soak for twenty to thirty minutes; a long grain needs that soak to elongate rather than snap. Use about one and a half parts water to one part rice, bring it to a boil, cover and cook on the lowest heat for ten to twelve minutes. Rest it five minutes off the heat before lifting the lid, then separate the grains with a fork rather than stirring with a spoon.

Pack and storage

1kg pack. Store in a cool, dry place, sealed after opening, and keep it airtight and away from strong spices.
